I hold a master degree in economics, and I have always been motivated by development studies and how the economy might contribute to improving the welfare of the most disadvantaged people. However, as a result of my work experience, I consider that development and poverty (topics where my heart beats) must be explained or studied using an interdisciplinary perspective rather than only through an economic framework.
I have five years of experience in applied economics, development research and complex data analysis. Specifically, my labor experience is related to development studies and public policies to improve living conditions of vulnerable families. For instance, I am currently working in the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) researching living income for rural households.
My research interests are poverty, inequality, public policy, decision making, and behavioral economics using a family economics perspective. I have researched these topics through a quantitative approach (applied microeconomics and impact evaluation methods) during my academic and work experience.
I have worked and researched development issues during my entire work experience. I participated in voluntary work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where I contributed to the construction of social and economic indicators, and I worked with some farmers to formulate a public employment policy. I also worked at the ProPacifico institution, contributing to monitoring security, health, and environmental problems in the Colombian Pacific Region. During my master’s degree, I researched intergenerational poverty transmission, subsidy dependency, and educational development. At the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), I have been working on building indicators for measuring well-being in rural households and evaluating the impact of public policies in rural zones.
Although it seems that I have worked on heterogeneous topics, all of them are related to development because development is about how to improve people’s welfare which implies different fields. That is why I consider that development knowledge has to be researched from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Knowledge using software such as Stata, R-studio, Microsoft Office, Power BI, Tableau, and Latex. Furthermore, I have a basic knowledge of ArcGIS.
